2009 Highlights – Ray Chuss
2009 only has a couple of days left but boy what a year for motocross from around the world. Over the next few days we will speak to various people within the industry and find out what made their 2009 year so special – first up our own Online Editor Chussy.
Rider:
Tough call this one as so many riders produced the goods and some not at all but I would have to say Brad Anderson, his first British championship and a nice guy to boot. Brad has a huge UK following, you only had to look around the British GP at Mallory Park to see that as there were Ando t/shirts everywhere.
Photo:
Ha-Ha that’s unfair as I’m going to choose one of my own and its got to be the start shot from the Maxxis British round as Hawkstone Park. The position you need to get this shot is quite hair raising as you are literally in line with the riders coming at you, one mistake and its good night Irene but f**k it the shot rocks!
Video:
As you all know we have the very talented Mikey Neale on board at MOTO, we work pretty close together on what would make the best video at the time, sometimes we go with a plan but when we get to where we need to film it goes tits up so the plan is out the window. That’s where we stand out above anyone else in the industry, a lot of the videos are superb like the guys at RacerX and Wes Williams in the USA but we have a lot of creative knowledge at MOTO which produces some great ideas so I would say the Jake Nicholls “Day in the life” was my fave video from 2009 – it was a real fun day.

Event:
Ouch this is a tough one, maybe the Handlebar Festival at Hawkstone but nobody turned up which was unbelievable or maybe the very last Maxxis round at Landrake, that one was quite tense to say the least. For me though it has to be the MXDN in Italy. The GP’s have had a lot of constructive critisism this year and to be honest we at MOTO have been one of only a handful of media who seem to tell the truth and don’t bullshit themselves around the sport but the Youthstream team produced the event that every promoter will need to look at and say “we want ours like that”, it was fantastic the atmosphere was mindblowing and for a so called man made circuit the track was awesome, maybe Youthstream should do all of them?
MOTO Magazine Feature:
There are so many great features in the magazine since the change, times have moved on and the changes are for the better for sure. We had the Mark Eastwood interview in issue 48 which set hearts racing around the industry, but for me it was the retro issue 47 great images, great creative idea and the cover was pretty colourful to say the least.
2010:
Its going to be an interesting year, riders are now looking at racing in the UK to earn a living and not racing GP’s, racing with the Maxxis, Red Bull and British Masters the top boys can earn a decent few quid and if they use that with promoting themselves to personal sponsors the boys should do ok. We only have a few clashes next year so I’m pleased about that as it makes it so difficult to cover everything.
Hopefully by the middle of 2010 the tide will start to turn and fans, riders, and hopefully new faces will start to re-appear on the scene as money is so tight for everyone, apart form that I think it is going to be a great year.
